Recap: Parenting Through a Pandemic Workshop with Kirk Martin

A big thank you to so many school parents, faculty, staff and parish families for joining HSA for the Parenting Through a Pandemic workshop we sponsored last week with speaker Kirk Martin.  We had over 100 registrants and over 65 people join us for the Zoom workshop.  Thank you to all of you that reached out in praise of the program. We may try to do another session like this in the future.  Stay tuned!

Several parents who were unable to join us for the program asked for additional information. We were unable to record the workshop for distribution, but Kirk Martin's website offers many resources including free podcasts and newsletters as well as fee-based products.

Several parents took notes during the program.  If you are one of those parents and would like to type them to share with others, please reach out to svmshsapres@gmail.com

We were able to capture the transcript of the Zoom chat and it contains a summary of Kirk's talk.

Zoom Chat Transcript:
Hey Everyone! Thank you so much for joining us! My name is Casey. I'm Kirk's son and I'll be helping out with questions this evening! If you have any questions that aren't answered throughout the course of the presentation, please email me at Casey@CelebrateCalm.com.
We have a free newsletter and will also be offering a 25% OFF coupon to all participants for resources on our website. Email "NJ" to Casey@CelebrateCalm.com and I'll respond with the coupon code!  I’ll also be typing key points in the chat box.

Kirk’s Key Points
  • Do not project into the future.
  • Affirm for what your kids are already doing well, rather than just picking out what they aren’t doing well.
  • Motion changes emotion (allow your children to move, get physical)
  • Space (give it to them!)
  • OWNERSHIP (strong willed children are natural leaders and need to feel included)
  • When we step back as parents, it gives our kids an opportunity to step up and be responsible for themselves.
  • Proactively give tools to succeed
  • Whenever you say NO to an inappropriate behavior, always say YES to an appropriate behavior.
  • Work with your children to use their natural gifts, talents and passions

Parent Question: Do you include meditation techniques to support children manage their energy? If yes, what type? Answer: Our materials do not have meditation techniques, but that’s something we’d encourage you to supplement with. Managing energy, getting kids focused and moving, yes we do provide lots of tools.

If Kirk does not get to your specific question, please do reach out to us at Casey@CelebrateCalm.com and we WILL answer your questions.
