Important Message From the School Nurse

Dear Parents,

The flu virus this year is very virulent and has become an epidemic in 39 states thus far. New Jersey is not at that point yet, but the incidence of the flu is increasing in our state. This strain is resistant to the vaccine, so if you were vaccinated it will only be 10% effective.  It is incumbent upon you to keep your children home if they begin to have upper respiratory symptoms like persistent coughing or runny noses.  Most likely it will be an upper respiratory infection, but the flu generally begins with respiratory symptoms and then the child will develop high fevers, muscle aches, and general malaise. It is very contagious, so it is better for all children to remain home until they are better.  Thank you for your cooperation.  Eileen Ruane RN
