Watch Highlights from Catholic Schools Week
Click on the link below to view highlights of our Catholic Schools Week. Details about the week appear below:
The SVMS celebration of Catholic Schools Week coincides with the national celebration, beginning with our Opening Liturgies the weekend of January 26th – 27th. There are many special events and treats for the students throughout the week; and plenty of fun for families at the “Family Pasta Night” on Thursday, January 31st.
Catholic Schools Week is an annual celebration of Catholic education in the United States. Schools across the country observe the week with Masses, open houses, community service projects and other activities for students, teachers and families. Through these events, schools focus on the value of Catholic education and its contributions to the Catholic Church and local communities.
This year’s theme is Catholic Schools: Learn. Serve. Lead. Succeed. Each day, a new theme is celebrated, and activities are based upon those concepts. Here is a general overview of the week’s events:
Sunday: Celebrating Our Parish
Catholic schools benefit all year long from the religious guidance, prayers and support parishes provide. To kick-off Catholic Schools Week, SVMS students will hold many special roles at two masses the weekend of January 26-27: Saturday, January 26th at 5pm and Sunday, January 27th at 9am (presided by Bishop Serratelli). At every mass during the weekend, an 8th grade student will read a message of appreciation for his/her Catholic education and express gratitude to the parishioners for their support. Students are encouraged to attend mass wearing their school uniform to show their Catholic school pride! Monday: Celebrating Our Teachers (LEARN)
Catholic School Teachers contribute immeasurably to the spiritual, academic and emotional growth of the students. On this day, we will honor our teachers and faculty with a special Faculty Continental Breakfast, followed by the Catholic Schools Week Opening Ceremony during Morning Prayers. In the afternoon, the teachers get a break from teaching, while they and the students enjoy a fun basketball show by the Harlem Wizards.
Tuesday: Celebrating Our Community (SERVE)
A central aspect of Catholic education is learning the importance of service to others. When students take part in service activities, they demonstrate the values and faith gained through Catholic education. On this “Day of Service”, the middle school (6th-8th grade) students will go out into the community and do service projects at P.G. Chambers School, Community Food Bank and Covenant House; while the younger students do "in-house" service projects and hear speakers from various charitable organizations, such as the Morristown Soup Kitchen, The Seeing Eye, and Family Promise of Morris County.
Wednesday: Celebrating Our Catholic Faith
This day falls on National Appreciation Day for Catholic Schools. To acknowledge this special day, some of the students will take part in the morning workshop “Writing Letters to Pope Francis”. In the afternoon, the entire student body and faculty will come together for an “All-School Mass”. The students will fill special roles in the mass and the teachers will be honored for the important work they do.
Thursday: Celebrating Our Parents & Families (LEAD)
Parents, guardians and family members play a vital role in Catholic education and prepare children to use their God-given talents later in life. On this day, the upper-grade students will have a special Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament in a Holy Half-Hour. In the evening, all of our SVMS families will come together for fun, food and a DJ dance party at the Family Pasta Night in the school gym. https://www.signupgenius.com/go/60b0948aeaf2fa13-cswfamily
Friday: Celebrating Our Students (SUCCEED)
We celebrate the students and all their accomplishments on this last day of Catholic Schools Week by giving them a FREE TAG DAY and planning enjoyable and meaningful activities to celebrate Student Appreciation Day! The day will begin with a “Living Rosary” during Morning Prayers. There will not be any tests scheduled or papers/projects due. At lunchtime, the students will be treated to Ice Cream with plenty of topping choices. The day will end with a Closing Ceremony, including a video montage summarizing the special moments of the week’s events.
