Catholic Schools Week 2018
St. Vincent Martyr School scheduled a full calendar of events to celebrate Catholic Schools Week 2018. This annual event, sponsored by the National Catholic Educational Association, helps member schools demonstrate the value of Catholic education to its students, the Church, local communities and the nation. The theme for 2018 was “Learn. Serve. Lead. Succeed.”
Students eagerly anticipated this week, as it combined meaningful community-service work with plenty of opportunities for fun. Each day, the activities centered on one of the aspects of the CSW theme. Check out our social media accounts to view some of the week's activities.
The celebration kicked off with liturgies on January 28 at St. Vincent Martyr Church, during which students will played key roles as greeters, altar servers and lectors. At the beginning of each Mass, representatives from the 8th grade class delivered a school message of gratitude for the parish’s support of the school. Students also distributed prayer cards to parishioners which featured a quote from Pope Benedict XVI, bolstering the importance of Catholic education: “A good school provides a rounded education for the whole person. And a good Catholic school, over and above this, should help all its students to become saints."
Kindergarten teacher Kayte Lauletti was honored at the Mass for her 25 years of service at SVMS.
Recognition of teachers continued on Monday, when the concept of “Learn” was invoked as an opportunity to provide the Faculty with a Continental Breakfast courtesy of the Home School Association. The prayerful Opening Ceremonies in the morning gave way to an afternoon of entertainment provided by the Harlem Wizards.
On Tuesday, students focused on the tenet of “Serve,” participating in a number of community-service projects and activities. Student in PK3 - Grade 1 listed to a speaker from Bridges explain the valuable mission of this organization, which delivers 65,000 brown bag lunches to the homeless each year. Preschoolers decorated brown bags, while Kindergarteners made Valentine’s cards to be included in the bags. First graders packed 100 bags to be delivered.
Second Graders attended a presentation by the representative from the Community Soup Kitchen in Morristown. Each student donated cookies and worked with classmates to prepare 50 boxes of cookies to be distributed by the Community Soup Kitchen.
Students in Grades 3 & 5 combined forces to assist Family Promise of Morris County, which assists homeless families. The third graders made small pillows that can be given as comfort items to children housed by the organization. The fifth graders decorated a canvas bag that was then filled with useful items for families as they attempt to reestablish themselves.
Fourth graders enjoyed a visit from a speaker and service dog from the Seeing Eye Dog Institute. The children collected towels, sheets and blankets needed to care for the dogs.
Middle-school students travelled to local area agencies to assist with outreach activities. They brought their spirit of service to P.G. Chambers, Hillside Food Bank & Covenant House.
Faith was celebrated at a special Mass held for the school community on Wednesday.
On Thursday evening, school families enjoyed the annual Family Pasta Night, which featured delicious food donated by Bunny’s Restaurant in South Orange. DJ Joe Cunder later spun tunes as students and parents got down for some fun.
Students were the focus of Friday’s “Succeed” theme, which was dubbed “Student Appreciation Day.” Students wore their SVMS Eagles team attire and were treated to an Ice Cream Social at lunchtime. The week concluded with a Closing Ceremony featuring a video montage of the week’s events, which truly reminded the students of the value of their Catholic education.
