USSR

Uninterrupted Sustained Silent Reading (USSR) provides students with a block of time during the school day, devoted to reading. During USSR time, everyone reads, including the teachers. There are no interruptions, and usually no required assignments or activities related to the reading.
 
In addition to providing students with independent reading time, these strategies aim to increase students' abilities to sustain reading for longer periods while providing models of good reading behavior. St. Vincent Martyr School believes that USSR helps students to value reading more, to become more fluent and to improve their vocabulary and comprehension.
 
Implementing this program is not complicated. However, we are most fortunate to have teachers that have the credentials, teaching experience and high level of knowledge to choose literature that distinguishes the success of this program as well as our students when it is time to apply to high school.
