Change is definitely a constant in life. Moving away from the place where we were born and raised, changing our customs and culture, our food, and adapting to a new life… change is not easy at all. This was true when we moved to the United States many years ago. And it was true when we looked to change schools for our children last year. Our daughter, Sarah, had attended the same school for eight years when change knocked on our door again, and we had to make a difficult decision. We needed to find a new catholic school that would fulfill our dream of a better faith-based education for our children. For our son, Sebastian, who had just started PreK 4, the change would be a simpler opportunity to start fresh.

We didn’t know much about SVMS and to be honest, we only found out about it from our beloved priest and friend, Fr. Yojan, who had just been assigned to St. Vincent Martyr Church. God definitely knows the what, the how, the when and the where, because when we talked to Fr. Yojan about our school situation, he mentioned SVMS and spoke highly about Sr. Noreen and the staff. His guidance has always been a blessing to our family and this time was no different. We took his advice and booked a visit with the school and an evaluation for our daughter.

From the moment we set foot at the school, we were impressed by the respect, professionalism and kindness shown to us by Sr. Noreen and the staff. When Sr. Noreen told us “We want Sarah here!” we were so proud and happy, and we knew it was a sign that our search for a new school was over. This was definitely the place God wanted us to find. We went home that day, thanking God for all the blessings he had sent our way. But we also knew this was not going to be an easy change, especially for Sarah, who had made such good friends over the last eight years. 

We had concerns about the adjustment process for our kids, but we were also making a spiritual change as a family by joining St. Vincent Martyr Church as parishioners. We found this to be a place where we were welcomed from day one and where all our talents and charisms could be of service to God and the community. Being able to support Fr. Yojan would complement the changes our family was making and help us to feel so blessed for all that was happening in our lives in such a short period of time.

Sister Noreen and her magnificent school staff made the transition process very easy, guiding us every step of the way, and making sure that we were taken care of. Sarah was very excited about SVMS after her shadow day and that made us all feel more comfortable. For Sebastian, the change was life-changing. Seeing his smile and happiness when he first interacted with his new kindergarten teacher, Mrs. Lee, we witnessed a bond that we never did in his previous school. That was a moment where we felt blessed in a very special way.

Then the big day came, the day we had been anticipating for months. We were nervous, but we just prayed to God that this new chapter for our family would begin on a positive note, and more importantly, that our children would feel comfortable, accepted and welcomed. My wife, Martha, and I could barely wait for that first school day to be finished, to pick the kids up and hear how everything went. When we finally sat down together, we realized our prayers had been answered. They felt comfortable. They felt accepted. And they were welcomed.

Of course, the transition wasn’t over after the first day. As predicted, Sarah’s transition was a little more difficult than Sebastian’s. She was sad about leaving her old classmates behind, but she amazed us with her strength, her commitment and her sense of responsibility. According to Sarah:

“I found my place at SVMS when I started making new friends, like my two best friends. They make everything so funny and amazing, making me laugh each day. The teachers are all so kind and amazing and I love learning new things every day! Sister Noreen also helped me a lot with the change and I learned so much through the process. All my classmates were so kind and my class has quite the sense of humor! I’ve made new friends and I love the school so much!”

There were many events, like the new families celebration, that have helped us get to know other new and existing families and have made the experience of being part of SVMS an amazing one. We continue to be impressed by the dedication, kindness and love our children receive from the staff and from Sr. Noreen every day. Seeing her care for every single student in our school really makes such a big difference. 

When Martha and I thought about having children, our Catholic faith was always the foundation upon which we wanted to cement our family. And what we always agreed on, was that we would do everything possible to offer them an education based on the Catholic faith, just like we had in our country, Colombia. We aim for it and with many risks of faith along the way, we are achieving it, and we will continue to do so God willing, because the education our children receive at SVMS complements the moral and spiritual values we try to instill at home every day. As a Hispanic family with a deep faith and strong Catholic beliefs, we feel that we have been very blessed in this first year as parishioners of St. Vincent Martyr Church and as members of the St. Vincent Martyrs School family. Being a part of both communities allows us to strengthen our faith, serve God and our community, and provide our children with the faith-based education we’ve always wanted for them.

We've lived in Parsippany for over 15 years and know that New Jersey is recognized for having some of the best Public Education Districts. But for us, our Catholic faith is the strength and foundation of our family, and the reason we always wanted our children to learn and grow up in an environment that included God as the epicenter of it all. We believe there is no better investment than the one we make in our children’s education, from the school we choose to the time we dedicate to their learning every day. With our children enrolled in SVMS, we feel tremendous peace, knowing that they are in a place where compassion, respect, and love for Jesus prevail over all things.
No doubt, change is a constant. And it can be hard, challenging, and stressful. But with faith, family, and a strong community, and with God at the center of it all, it's definitely worth the effort. We are so grateful to God for this change, and to SVMS for being a fundamental part in the intellectual and spiritual development of our children.

El cambio es definitivamente una constante en la vida. Alejarnos del lugar donde nacimos y crecimos, cambiar nuestras costumbres y cultura, nuestra comida, y adaptarnos a una nueva vida…cambiar no es nada fácil. Esto era cierto cuando nos mudamos a los Estados Unidos hace muchos años. Y fue cierto cuando buscamos cambiar las escuelas para nuestros hijos el año pasado. Nuestra hija, Sarah, había asistido a la misma escuela durante ocho años cuando el cambio volvió a llamar a nuestra puerta y tuvimos que tomar una decisión difícil. Necesitábamos encontrar una nueva escuela católica que cumpliera nuestro sueño de una mejor educación basada en la fe para nuestros hijos. Para nuestro hijo, Sebastián, que acababa de comenzar PreK 4, el cambio sería una oportunidad más sencilla para comenzar de nuevo.

No sabíamos mucho sobre SVMS y, para ser honestos, solo nos enteramos por nuestro amado sacerdote y amigo, el Padre Yojan, quien acababa de ser asignado a la Iglesia de St. Vincent Martyr. Dios definitivamente sabe el qué, el cómo, el cuándo y el dónde, porque cuando hablamos con el Padre Yojan sobre nuestra situación escolar, mencionó SVMS y habló muy bien de Sister Noreen y el personal de SVMS. La guía del Padre Yojan siempre ha sido una bendición para nuestra familia y esta vez no fue diferente. Seguimos su consejo y reservamos una visita a la escuela y una evaluación para nuestra hija.

Desde el momento en que pusimos un pie en la escuela, nos impresionó el respeto, el profesionalismo y la amabilidad que nos mostró Sister Noreen y el personal de SVMS. Cuando Sister Noreen nos dijo "¡Queremos a Sarah aquí!" nos sentimos muy orgullosos y felices, y sabíamos que era una señal de que nuestra búsqueda de una nueva escuela había terminado. Este era definitivamente el lugar que Dios quería que encontráramos. Regresamos a casa ese día, agradeciendo a Dios por todas las bendiciones que nos había enviado. Pero también sabíamos que no iba a ser un cambio fácil, especialmente para Sarah, que había hecho muy buenos amigos durante los últimos ocho años en su antigua escuela. 

Teníamos preocupación sobre el proceso de ajuste de nuestros hijos, pero también estábamos haciendo un cambio espiritual como familia, al unirnos a la Iglesia St. Vincent Martyr como feligreses. Encontramos que este es un lugar donde fuimos acogidos desde el primer día y donde todos nuestros talentos y carismas podrían estar al servicio de Dios y de la comunidad. Poder apoyar al Padre Yojan complementaría los cambios que estaba haciendo nuestra familia y nos ayudaría a sentirnos muy bendecidos por todo lo que estaba sucediendo en nuestras vidas en tan poco tiempo.

Sister Noreen y su magnífico personal escolar hicieron que el proceso de transición fuera muy fácil, guiándonos en cada paso del camino y asegurándose de encargarse de nosotros. Sarah estaba muy entusiasmada con SVMS después de su “Shadowing Day” y eso hizo que todos nos sintiéramos más cómodos. Para Sebastián, el cambio fue un cambio de vida. Al ver su sonrisa y felicidad cuando interactuó por primera vez con su nueva maestra de kindergarten, Mrs Lee, fuimos testigos de un vínculo que nunca tuvimos en su escuela anterior. Ese fue un momento en el que nos sentimos bendecidos de una manera muy especial.

Entonces llegó el gran día, el día que esperábamos desde hacía meses. Estábamos nerviosos, pero oramos a Dios para que este nuevo capítulo para nuestra familia comenzara con una nota positiva y, aun más importante, para que nuestros hijos se sintieran cómodos, aceptados y bienvenidos. Mi esposa Martha y yo, apenas podíamos esperar a que terminara ese primer día de clases, para recoger a los niños y escuchar cómo fue todo. Cuando finalmente nos sentamos juntos, nos dimos cuenta de que nuestras oraciones habían sido atendidas. Se sintieron cómodos, se sintieron aceptados y fueron muy bien recibidos. 

Por supuesto, la transición no terminó después del primer día. Como estaba presupuestado, la transición de Sarah fue un poco más difícil que la de Sebastián. Ella estaba triste por dejar atrás a sus antiguos compañeros de clase, pero, aun así, nos sorprendió con su fuerza, su compromiso y su sentido de la responsabilidad. Según Sarah:

“Encontré mi lugar en SVMS cuando comencé a hacer nuevos amigos, como mis dos mejores amigas. Ellas hacen que todo sea muy divertido y sorprendente, haciéndome reír todos los días. ¡Los maestros son todos muy amables y sorprendentes y me encanta aprender cosas nuevas todos los días! Sister Noreen también me ayudó mucho con el cambio y aprendí mucho durante el proceso. ¡Todos mis compañeros de clase fueron muy amables y mi clase tiene bastante sentido del humor! ¡He hecho nuevos amigos y me encanta la escuela!”

Hubo muchos eventos, como la celebración de nuevas familias, que nos ayudaron a conocer a otras familias nuevas y existentes y han hecho que la experiencia de ser parte de SVMS sea increíble. Seguimos impresionados por la dedicación, la amabilidad y el amor que nuestros niños reciben del personal y de Sister Noreen todos los días. Verla preocuparse por cada uno de los estudiantes de nuestra escuela realmente marca una gran diferencia.

Cuando Martha y yo pensamos en tener hijos, nuestra fe católica siempre fue la base sobre la cual queríamos cimentar nuestra familia. Y en lo que siempre estuvimos de acuerdo, fue que haríamos todo lo posible para ofrecerles una educación basada en la fe católica, tal como la tuvimos en nuestro país, Colombia. Apuntamos a ello y con muchos riesgos de fe en el camino, lo estamos logrando, y lo seguiremos haciendo si Dios quiere, porque la educación que reciben nuestros niños en SVMS complementa los valores morales y espirituales que tratamos de inculcar en casa todos los días. Como familia Hispana con una fe profunda y fuertes creencias católicas, sentimos que hemos sido muy bendecidos en este primer año como feligreses de la Iglesia St. Vincent Martyr y como miembros de la familia de la escuela St. Vincent Martyr. Ser parte de ambas comunidades nos permite fortalecer nuestra fe, servir a Dios y a nuestra comunidad, y brindarles a nuestros hijos la educación basada en la fe que siempre quisimos para ellos. 

Hemos vivido en Parsippany durante más de 15 años y sabemos que Nueva Jersey es reconocida por tener algunos de las mejores Distritos Educativos Públicos. Pero para nosotros, nuestra fe católica es la fuerza y el cimiento de nuestra familia, y la razón por la cual siempre quisimos que nuestros hijos aprendieran y crecieran en un ambiente que incluyera a Dios como epicentro de todo.  Creemos que no hay mejor inversión que la que hacemos en la educación de nuestros hijos, desde la escuela que elegimos hasta el tiempo que dedicamos a su aprendizaje todos los días. Con nuestros niños inscritos en SVMS, sentimos una enorme tranquilidad, sabiendo que están en un lugar donde la compasión, el respeto y el amor por Jesús prevalecen sobre todas las cosas.

Sin duda, el cambio es una constante. Y puede ser duro, desafiante y estresante. Pero con fe, familia y una comunidad fuerte, y con Dios como eje principal de todo, definitivamente vale la pena el esfuerzo. Estamos muy agradecidos con Dios por este cambio, y con SVMS por ser parte fundamental en el desarrollo intelectual y espiritual de nuestros niños.
